Best Practices for Interpreting Fair Use
American University's Center for Social Media offers The Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education to help educators interpret the copyright doctrine of fair use when using media literacy concepts and techniques. The Center for Social Media has also created the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video, which helps creators, online providers, copyright holders, and others interested in making online video interpret the copyright doctrine of fair use. Also useful for the purpose of addressing copyright when creating multimedia content is the Documentary Filmmakers' Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use.
Advocates of open educational resources created a Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for OpenCourseWare in an effort to provide guidance to institutions and others that promote learning through universal access to high-quality educational material organized as courses. MIT's introduction of OpenCourseWare, begun in 2002, was the impetus for subsequent initiatives in worldwide access to knowledge, culminating in the Open Educational Resources Commons.
The American Musicological Society has developed a document to assist scholars writing about music to interpret the fair use doctrine for their research purposes. The Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use of Dance-Related Materials was produced by the Dance Heritage Coalition and endorsed by a number of dance associations. The purpose of the document is to clarify what professionals working with dance-related materials regard as reasonable application of the fair use doctrine.
