Our educational mission is to develop programs and services that teach George Mason students how to apply the information literacy skills that are necessary for their academic and lifelong success. This mission will be accomplished by:
Information literacy is the ability to recognize when information is needed, access information effectively, and use information appropriately for any specific need.
The amount of information produced today, and the speed with which it can be accessed, requires the ability to adapt information seeking skills to many different and changing situations. To be most effective, information literacy instruction must provide opportunities to learn and apply these skills in many contexts and environments. Therefore, information literacy instruction cannot be a single class, or even a series of classes; rather it needs to be integrated into George Mason University's curriculum through General Education and courses within the majors.
