September 23, 2004 2004 marked the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision overturning the notion of separate but equal and school segregation. In commemoration of this historic event, George Mason Libraries and the Department of History and Art History held the 2004 Finley Lecture on September 23, 2004. The Finley Lecture panel discussion explored the landmark Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision, its expectations, impact, and what still remains to be done. Roger Wilkins acted as panel discussion moderator and the panel was comprised of scholars and leading civil rights and education leaders, including Robert Hawkes, Kati Haycock, Wendy Puriefoy and William Taylor. Over 600 people attended the discussion, which included readings from the C. Harrison Mann Collection read by members of the GMU Theater Department. The event was an overwhelming success and was attended by students, faculty, staff and members of the community. Support for the 2004 Finley Lecture was provided by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy.
