The University Libraries has recently purchased electronic access to Elsevier’s impressive International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences. The electronic access to this important reference source, available both on and off campus to GMU faculty, staff, and students, is linked to the main record for this title in the GMU Catalog. This Encyclopedia is the first attempt in a generation to map the social and behavioral sciences on a grand scale. Not since the publication in 1968 of the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, edited by David L. The University Libraries and the Prince William Campus has been privileged to work with Mary Buckley, Mercer Library's Circulation Supervisor, since 1997. Mary operates on the "just do it" philosophy, for which she has not only won the respect and admiration of co-workers, students, and faculty, but has been nationally recognized for her extreme work ethic and excellence in customer service. In Mary's own words:
I was born so long ago, that Harry S. Truman was the reigning president.
I grew up in a small NH town, population about 500 then, and my elementary school held eight grades in four classrooms. I think the highest total student population while I was in attendence was 100. When My eighth grade class graduated, it was the last eighth grade to do so. The next September all 5-8 graders were bused to another district.
High school was an all-girl Catholic boarding school. Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend it! My senior graduating class was the last one. The high school school closed that June. I was afraid to go to college for fear I'd close that, too!
I married, had two children before I was 21 and moved around the country and world with my career Army husband. I re-entered the work world while we were stationed in Frankfurt Germany. I was a computer operator/programmer and sometime analyst. This is back when COBOL was THE computer language to learn. I wonder if anyone still knows it???
I've worked in libraries since January 1989 and have been at George Mason since July 1997. I became the Circulation Supervisor at Mercer Library in January 1999. I enjoy solving and resolving circulation issues and problems. I truly feel that we here at Mercer are part of an extended family and I am blessed to be a member of it.
I am an active member of the Virginia Library Association and attend the Paraprofessional Conference every year. I am co-chairing the 2005 conference with my friend and co-worker from the Johnson Center Library, Cynthia Bentley.
Hobbies, of course, include reading, camping and spending time with my twin granddaughters (soon to be older sisters!!)
