Mercer Library Staff Directory
It's hard to believe, but we're already nearing the Fall Holiday Break, and this 2004 Fall Semester has been busier than ever!
Mercer Library has undergone an inventory of all collections, received exciting new titles, and enjoyed growing overall with the Prince William Community as our head count is higher than ever! The official renaming ceremony went off without a hitch, under the watchful eyes of the newest additions to our library (and a couple of our favorite people!), John Mercer and George Mason in their respective portraits. Look for biographical sketches on John Mercer and George Mason in our next issue!
Mercer Library is also celebrating Sedigheh (Sedi) Kalantary, our Document Fulfillment Coordinator, who has won the November ITU Employee of the Month Award! In her capacity as Document Fulfillment Coordinator at the Prince William Campus, Sedi is responsible for all incoming and outgoing requests for Inter-Campus, Consortium Loan, and Inter-Library Loan items. Sound easy? This involves searching the stacks for items needed at other Mason Libraries, Consortium libraries and other libraries outside of our system. In addition she is responsible for copying requested articles and processing arriving materials that patrons wish to pick up at the PWC Library.
Co-workers consider her articulate, intelligent, a great team collaborator,
flexible, willing to take on any tasks requested of her and the adjectives
go on and on. Good customer service and a desire to help comes second
nature to Sedi which not only makes her a joy to work with but an inspiration
to others that cross her path. Sedi celebrated this honor with Joy
Hughes, Ruth Kifer, Heather Hannan, Mary Buckley, and other co-workers
on November 5th. Congratulations Sedi - it is well deserved!

ARTBibliographies Modern
ARTBibliographies Modern is a key electronic resource for researchers
studying modern and contemporary art. This database provides abstracts
of English language and worldwide literature on art and design, photography
and its history, art trends, and individual artists from the late nineteenth
century to the present day. A wide range of subjects are indexed,
including traditional media such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture.
Also covered are theatre arts, conservation, caricatures, crafts, ceramics,
ethnic arts and fashion, along with new media such as computer and electronic
art. The ARTBibliographies Modern database indexes an expansive range
of materials, including books, journal articles, exhibition catalogs, essays
and dissertations. The database provides abstracts from the late
1960's to the present, with about 13,000 new entries added annually, and
is updated six times per year. Researchers can locate this new database
through the Dabases heading on the GMU Libraries HomePage, alphabetically
or under the heading "Arts and Humanities."

In June 2001, Bill Fleming came on board at Mercer Library as a Social Sciences Librarian. Since then, the GMU Libraries and in particular, the Prince William Campus, has enjoyed his warm and welcoming demeanor and his unparalleled research expertise in the Administration of Justice department, the Recreation, Health and Tourism department, and the Initiatives in Educational Transformation (IET) program. Bill also provides assistance when needed to all other Humanities and Social Sciences general education courses taught on the Prince William Campus.
Bill's impressive background includes a BA in History from the University of Virginia, Graduate work in History at the College of William and Mary, and a Masters in Library Science from the University of Maryland. Bill's extensive experience also includes 15 years of work in the financial services sector!
In addition to his responsibilities at Mercer Library, Bill is also an active member of the Virginia Library Association (VLA) and the Association of College and Research Libraries. He is an elected member of the Beta Phi Mu and Phi Kappa Phi academic/professional honor societies. Bill has been published in VLA's "Virginia Libraries" periodical, and has presented workshops and lectures at GMU, Northern Virginia Community College, and the VLA Paraprofessional Forum.
Don't worry though - we do let him get home once in awhile!! There, he spends time with his beautiful wife and 2 1/2 year old son, Ben. It is Ben, Bill credits with keeping him "humble." Bill's coworkers can agree that there's no other way to perceive this highly talented, warm, and thoughtful guy.
When asked, Bill Fleming is more than ready to answer that in his job,
he enjoys most, "the chance to help people in a tangible way on a daily
basis and the chance to work in the nurturing family atmosphere of the
Mercer Library and Prince William Campus in general." It wouldn't
be a family without you Bill! Mercer Library staff and patrons, as
well as the rest of the GMU Libraries and Prince William Campus appreciate
all you do!!!
Dina Delma has returned for her 2nd year as (a very highly valued) Student Assistant at Mercer Library. In her role, Dina assists patrons at the circulation desk, has worked extensively on Document Fulfillment with Mercer's Sedi Kalantary. Dina also assists with Stacks Maintenance by shelving, shelf-reading, and working on special projects such as inventories and collection shifts. Mercer Library staff would like to introduce you to the dynamic, hard-working Student Assistant with the beaming smile, Dina Delma! In her own words:
I was born and raised in a city called Tenkodogo in Burkina Faso, West Africa. I attended school in teh same city except grade 13. At that point I attended school in the capital city, Ouagadougou. I know these names are difficult to pronounce, but I hope it will inspire your curiousity to learn more about Burkina!
I came to the U.S. October 10, 1997 for family reasons, but was blessed to attend school at Northern Virginia Community College where I earned my Associate's degree in Information System Technology. After graduation, my family encouraged me to pursue my Bachelor's degree at George Mason University, and that's where I found Mercer Library.
I started working at Mercer in the Fall of 2003. In addition to working at the Circulation Desk and assisting with Document Fulfillment, I was more than happy to perform any work that was given to me for the opportunity to learn and acquire experience. The staff at Mercer Library is like a family to me. They are very understanding, caring, and encouraging which promotes excellence in my work. I am very fortunate to be a part of the library work force and I would recommend the library to any student who is looking for a job.
In the summer of 2004 I was a recipient of an Immediate Recognition Award with a monetary gift. In addition I was awarded a gift card in December of 2003 that I deeply appreciate. The privilege of knowing and working with such a crew will be cherished forever.
The staff at Mercer Library cherishes Dina Delma for her outstanding contributions as a Student Assistant! Her attention to detail, glowing personality, and overall stellar performance is profoundly appreciated by all those fortunate enough to work with her. Please stop by and say hello to one of Mercer's oustanding Student Assistants!
