George Mason University Libraries Planning Council

Function: The Planning Council coordinates high-level decision making and engages in intermediate and long-range strategic planning for the University Libraries. The Planning Council functions to:

  1. Engage in intermediate and long-range strategic planning
  2. Discuss policy issues
  3. Provide advice and information to the University Librarian
  4. Develop programmatic initiatives
  5. Monitor progress on annual goals and objectives, on cross-divisional work assigned to units, departments and/or teams, and on task force recommendations
  6. Serve in advisory role to the Administrative Leadership Team
  7. Review and address high impact or controversial issues
  8. Review library-wide priorities for resource allocation
  9. Share and discuss information on campus developments that have an impact on library operations

Structure: The Planning Council meets monthly. The agenda for each meeting is set by the University Librarian, with the assistance of the Planning, Assessment & Organizational Development Coordinator. A call for agenda items is sent to Council members at least one week prior to each monthly meeting. Council members are asked to submit agenda items, along with any associated documentation, prior to each meeting. A final agenda is sent out at least one day in advance of each meeting.

The Planning, Assessment & Organizational Development Coordinator makes a summary record of the actions that have been agreed upon during each Council meeting. These summary notes are posted to the University Libraries’ intranet within one week of each meeting; an email is sent out to all library staff, notifying them of the posting and providing a link to the notes. Membership: The membership of the Planning Council consists of the:
  • University Librarian
  • Associate University Librarian for Digital Programs & Systems
  • Associate University Librarian for Research, Instruction & Outreach Services
  • Associate University Librarian for Resources & Collection Management Services
  • Director of ITU Administrative Services
  • Director of Development
  • Planning, Assessment & Organizational Development Coordinator
  • 5 Members with Rotating 1-Year Terms, to be
    Appointed by the University Librarian in Consultation with the AULs:
    • 3 Department Heads
    • 2 Non-Department Head Professional/Administrative Faculty
    • 2 Classified Staff
