Historical Newspapers Full-Image Archive now available via the web

ProQuest Historical Newspapers offers a full-image archive of the:

  • New York Times (1851 - to approximately 2-3 years ago)
  • Wall Street Journal (1889- to approximately 15-16 years ago)
  • Washington Post (1877-  to approximately 16-17 years ago)

(More recent full-text of these newspapers can be found in other databases, e.g., the New York Times and Washington Post in LexisNexis Academic and the Wall Street Journal in ABI Inform or Factiva.)

There is complete coverage of each issue -- including not only articles and editorials but also photos, graphics, ads, and comics and cartoons.  Images of full pages and of individual articles are available as downloadable PDF.

From the Advanced Search screen, searching can be done by keyword as well as by date, article type, and author.  After a specific newspaper is selected, a Publications Search allows issues for individual dates to be browsed.    The most useful help information will be found under the Tools: Search Tips link.

Search results can be displayed as:

1) a "Page map," a low resolution, full-page image format for browsing

Moving the mouse over the page will display a highlighted text box with its headline.  Clicking on the highlighted area will take you to the ÒArticle image.Ó

2) a "Page image," a high resolution, full-page image format for reading

Tools on the Adobe menu allow you to enlarge or reduce images.

3) an "Article image," a high resolution, scanned image in PDF

Tools on the Adobe menu allow you to enlarge or reduce images.

For printing Adobe allows reducing or enlarging images to paper size and rotating or centering images on the paper.  Use the Graphics Select Tool to selects a part of an article to be printed.
