Library Resources

Books on music have call letters beginning ML or MT and are located in the Johnson Center Library open stacks. Printed music and recordings have call letters that begin with M and are located on the first floor of the Johnson Center Library. A book designated REF. is non-circulating and will be located in the Johnson Center Music Library Music Reference section. Books with * are also located in the Fenwick Library Reference section.

To find thematic catalogues for individual composers, perform a guided keyword search in the Online Catalog using the name of the composer and "thematic catalogs" [note: the ue is dropped] as a subject.

    Useful but dated guide to contents of critical editions. Complements Heyer's.

  • Hymns and Tunes--An Index

    Resource for finding hymns or hymn tunes from 78 different hymnals in use until 1965.

  • Historical Sets, Collected Editions, and Monuments of Music(Heyer's)

    The core scholarly guide to collected editions and anthologies of the works of major composers. Lists full bibliographic information, contents of individual volumes in collected editions, extensive cross-referencing, and indexing by composer, title, and editor.

    Index to contents of song books from 1950 onwards. Entries by song titles, first lines, and first lines of the chorus. Includes an index of composers and lyricists and a bibliography of all included song books.

Aria Database
The Aria Database is a diverse collection of information on over 1000 operatic arias. Designed for singers and non-singers alike, the Database includes translations and aria texts of most arias as well as a collection of MIDI files of operatic arias and ensembles.

Cyber Hymnal
This resource references over 1,600 hymns and gospel songs. It provides access to lyrics, sound, background information,links to other sources, photos, MIDI files and scores. Search by title, topic, tune, or by a person's name.

Harmony Central
This all-in-one Web site gives musicians benefits not available through traditional physical retail channels and provides extensive product information and music archive links.

Levy Sheet Music Collection
Johns Hopkins University's database of popular American Music from 1780-1960. It has more than 30,000 sheets of music under different categories including patriotic songs,Civil War songs, comic songs, dance, vocal and instrumental music.

Lieder and Song Texts
An archive of public-domain texts, in the original language, of Lieder by composers such as Schubert, Liszt, and Strauss. Search the site under composer, poet, first line, or title. Also has a list of related links to other useful resources such as Altavista's Translation Service, and a picture gallery of composers.

Music Publishers's Association Directory of Music Publishers
A list of members with links to publishers' web sites and online catalogs.

Opera Glass
This resources provides opera synopses and libretti. It also includes performance histories, discographies, pictures, and information on lesser and well-known Opera composers and librettists.

Popular Songs: Image Collections
Contains links to online collections of digitized sheet music.

Includes links to BMI and ASCAP.
