(Exploring and Collecting History Online) Virtual Center
- This site,
sponsored by the GMU Center for History and New Media, catalogs, annotates,
and reviews web sites dealing with the history of Science, Technology,
and Medicine. You can search the database of links or browse by subject.
At last count (7/23/02) there were 52 sites dedicated to the history
of chemistry alone.
Chemistry
Specific
- ACS
Division of the History of Chemistry
- This Division of the American
Chemical Society "focuses on the history of chemistry and allied
sciences, including the interactions between chemistry and society."
Their web site includes information on the activities of the Division
(papers presented, symposia given, publications) as well as a list
of related
links.
- Chemical
Heritage Foundation
- Located in Philadelphia and
housing a library and archives on the History of Chemistry, "the
Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) seeks to advance the heritage and
public understanding of the chemical and molecular sciences by operating
a historical research library; discovering and disseminating information
about historical resources; encouraging research, scholarship, and
popular writing; publishing historical materials; conducting oral
histories; [and] creating exhibits..." Includes an excellent
list of links
of Chemical and Historic Interest.

Here is a brief list of organizations
related to chemistry. These include such organizations as scientific academies,
foundations, and research councils. See the special section on Professional
Associations for additional Organizations.
General Science and Technology
Organizations
- National
Academy of Sciences (NAS)
- A non-profit organization that
advises the United States Federal Government on questions of science
and technology. Has a "subject
hub" for Chemistry and publishes the Proceedings
of the National Academy of Sciences. The National
Academies Press web site also includes over 2,500 publications
from the NAS online, full-text, and for free.
- National
Science Foundation (NSF)
- The NSF is an independent agency
of the United States Federal Government that provides grants to promote
research and education in the sciences and engineering. Also has a
Division
of Chemistry.
Chemistry
Specific
- American
Chemistry Council
- Represents the United States
chemical industry in matters of public policy and public relations.
Contains information on current policy issues in Congress and other
venues. Also attempts to coordinate and promote safety, research,
and testing within the chemical industry.
- IUPAC
(International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry).
- IUPAC investigates and makes
recommendations on international chemical matters that need regulation,
standardization, or codification. "IUPAC has long been recognized
as the world authority on chemical nomenclature, terminology, standardized
methods for measurement, atomic weights, and many other critically
