Locate Non-Full-Text Journal Articles

MASON—GMU's Library Catalog
If the article you want is not available full-text in the database you are searching, you first need to see if the University Libraries owns the journal. To find this out you must use MASON, our online catalog:
  • Select Title/Author/Subject
  • Select Journal Title, then type in the name of the journal in the search box. (Search for the title of the journal, NOT the title of the article.) Click on Search.
  • If we own the journal, it should appear alphabetically in a list. Click on the name of the journal to view the holdings record and see if the libraries has the specific issue(s) / year(s) you are looking for.

Request Pre-1983 journal articles from Arlington
PLEASE NOTE: If the journal you want was published before 1983 and is not on microfilm or microfiche, it is possible it was sent to the Arlington Campus for storage. If you need a particular article from Arlington, you can have it delivered to Fenwick Library. This usually takes one to two working days. Request delivery of a pre-1983 journal article from Arlington.

WRLC Catalog
If the journal you are searching for is NOT in MASON, next check the WRLC catalog. The WRLC is a consortium of Washington DC area libraries. If the journal you need is available at another library, you are able to choose "REQUEST" and request a specific article from that journal. You will need to provide all of the information such as article title, author, year, page numbers, etc. The article will be scanned to a PDF file and sent to you electronically. This usually take two working days. In order to use this service, you must be a George Mason student, faculty or staff. Also, if this is the first time you are using this service, you MUST have your library card/student ID activated at one of the circulation desks.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Forms
Finally, if the journal you want is NOT in MASON and NOT in the WRLC, you will need to fill out a standard interlibrary loan (ILL) form. Usually a photocopy of the article will be sent to Fenwick for you to pick up. This can take 1-3 weeks, possibly more depending on how rare the journal is and from where it must be requested. Again, in order to use this service, you must be a George Mason student, faculty or staff.

If you need any further assistance locating a journal article, please visit your nearest reference desk.
