MASON—GMU's Library Catalog

To see if the University Libraries own a certain book, first check MASON, our online catalog. Here you can search by author, title, subject or keyword. Please take note of the various fields when looking at a record. The "Call Number" is the most important field since you will need this to locate the item on the shelf. The "Location" will tell you where the item is being held, in Fenwick, the Johnson Center, or at the Arlington or Prince William Campuses. Also, extra descriptions like "Reference" or "Documents" will indicate that the item is being held in the Reference area or the Government Documents area. Finally, checking the status will indicate whether the item is checked in or checked out. If the item is checked out and you do not need the book soon, you can ask the circulation desk to put a recall on the book. When the book is checked back in, it will be held for you, and you will be notified that it is available for pick-up at the circulation desk. (More information on GMU's circulation policies.)

InterCampus Loan

If the book you want is checked in but at another GMU campus, you can request an InterCampus loan to have the book delivered to Fenwick in one to two days. In order to use this service, you must be a George Mason student, faculty or staff.

WRLC Catalog

If the book you are searching for is NOT in MASON, next check the WRLC catalog. The WRLC is a consortium of Washington DC area libraries. If the item you need is available at another library, you are able to choose "REQUEST" and have the item sent to Fenwick Library. This usually take two working days. In order to use this service, you must be a George Mason student, faculty or staff. Also, if this is the first time you are using this service, you MUST have your library card/student ID activated at any one of the library circulation desks.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Forms
Finally, if the book you want is NOT in MASON and NOT in the WRLC, you will need to fill out a standard interlibrary loan (ILL) form. This usually take 1-3 weeks, possibly more depending on how rare the item is and from where it must be requested. Again, in order to use this service, you must be a George Mason student, faculty or staff.

If you need any further assistance locating a book or similar item, please visit your nearest reference desk.
