New Database Announcement

ScienceDirect Now Available Online

University Libraries is proud to announce a new full-text database, ScienceDirect, available to the George Mason University community. ScienceDirect contains close to 1.5 million articles from 1995 to the present. Through a cooperative purchase with six Virginia schools, our subscription to ScienceDirect provides online, full-text access to over 860 journals published by Elsevier Science and its partners. These journals are marked by a green box next to their titles when browsing.

An additional 320 full-text journals, marked by a pale green box when browsing, are available as limited access journals. While the GMU community has full use of these journals, the library will be charged an additional fee for each full-text article retrieved from any of these 320 journals. Therefore, care should be taken that articles from these journals are particularly well suited for your research.

ScienceDirect is divided into 22 pre-defined subject areas such as: Agricultural and Biological Sciences; Business, Management and Accounting; Civil Engineering; Computer Science; Engineering and Technology; Medicine; Psychology; and Social Science.

Users can view journal title lists alphabetically, by subject and sub-topic, or by publisher. Individual titles can be browsed through their table of contents. ScienceDirect also provides a number of search capabilities: simple searches on abstracts, standard bibliographic data, and the full-text of an article, or advanced searching using Boolean operators. Searches can be limited by date and subject. Selected citations and abstracts can be exported to a citation management program (ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager) or converted into ASCII.

Users can also create a personal account through ScienceDirect. Benefits include automated scheduled searching with e-mail notification of the search results and e-mail notification of new journal issues as they become available. A personal account can also be used to create a personal journal list to be browsed or searched and to set a specific subject home page upon login. Each subject home page contains a list of relevant journals, related news, new database features, and user tips.

To access ScienceDirect when on campus, go to the University Libraries homepage (http://library.gmu.edu) and then click "Alphabetical List" under Databases, or use the direct URL: http://www.sciencedirect.com. Be sure to use the Group-Wide Login if you do not have a personal account set-up. Access to ScienceDirect is restricted to faculty, staff and students of George Mason University and will require access through a proxy server when used off campus. (See http://magik.gmu.edu/lso/proxy.html for more information.)
