Qualitative AnalysisQualitative analysis uses "unstructured" data (text, visual images, and interviews) to examine relationships that cannot be easily explained through qualitative analysis. The purpose of qualitative analysis is two-fold. First, qualitative analysis allows the researcher to become familiar with the phenomena being studied; second, it allows the researcher to formulate a new explanation/theory by examining the phenomena's interrelationships. This process is conducted by data collection, coding according to given words or symbols and then running analyses to make inferences. For more information on qualitative analysis please contact: What is LINK?The Fenwick Library installation, LINK, is located in the Statistical Research Services Center first floor, Wing C. The facility is equipped with software and hardware particularly useful for qualitative analysis. Software includes NVivo, OmniPage Pro, L&H Translator Pro, and Remark Optical Mark Reading (OMR), a program for scoring bubble questionnaires. The facility also contains hardware such as a scanner, zip drive and CD-ROM reader.
LINK SoftwareNVivoThere are a variety of software programs available to researchers in qualitative analysis. The workstation called LINK contains one of the most sophisticated and widely used programs, NVivo. This program allows the researcher flexibility in how information is stored and edited, provides a model component for those who are visually inclined, as well as coding and analysis systems that allow for maximum user-friendly applicants. It also includes hyperlinks to pictures or images, internal and external databites, and a memo system to store ideas and concepts while using it. NVivo also has the capability to export information into a program called Decision Explorer. For more information on NVivo contact:
AnSWRAnSWR is a text-based qualitative analysis software. This software is mostly used for team analysis. Similar to the other software, AnSWR has the ability to organize, code, and analyze large amounts of data. AnSWR outputs both qualitative and quantitative reports; therefore it is compatible with most quantitative software. AnSWR is FREE from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For more information on AnSWR: CDC EZ-TEXT is a FREE software program that assists researchers in creating qualitative databases. It is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For more information on CDC EZ-TEXT:
OmniPage ProOmniPage Pro is used with a scanner to input printed text and images into the computer. This type of scanning is useful if the researcher is conducting open-ended survey for participants to write in their responses or if researchers have visuals that they wish to accompany a project. For more information on OmniPage Pro:
Remark OMRRemark OMR is a scanning software program that reads filled-in bubbles, checkboxes and barcodes. This program is most helpful if a researcher is using a fill-in survey form to obtain data in order to access participants' responses. For more information on Remark OMR contact:
