All of the following resources are located in the Statistical Research Services Center at Fenwick Library.

  • Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)

The SPSS company website is an excellent resource for technical support including SPSS AnswerNet. SPSS is loaded on the Memex computer.

Support documentation are available in a locked file drawer in the Statistical Research Services Center (ask at the reference desk for access):

    SPSS Base 9.0 User's Guide (1999)

The following books are also housed in the Statistical Research Services Center and are non-circulating:

The New Statistical Analysis of Data by T.W. Anderson and Jeremy D. Finn (1997)

The SPSS Guide to The Statistical Analysis of Data by Susan B. Gerber and Kristin E. Voelkl (1997)

Using SPSS for Windows: Data Analysis and Graphics by Kristin E. Voelkl and Susan B. Gerber (1999)

SPSS 8.0 Guide to Data Analysis by Marija J. Norusis (1998)

A short course on SPSS is held once a semester. CD-ROM based tutorials for SPSS Basics and SPSS Intermediate are available in C103 on one of the smaller Pentium computers. Each CD takes about 4.5 hours to complete. A tutorial is available within SPSS. Go to "Help" on the menu bar.

  • SAS

SAS is the most complete and complex statistical package. For more information, please visit the company website. The complete set of SAS manuals, except for data mining, is available online on Memex.

The following books are also housed in the Statistical Research Services Center and are non-circulating:

Applied Multivariate Statistics With SAS Software by Ravindra Khattree and Dayanand N. Naik (1999)

Applied Statistics and the SAS Programming Language by Ronald P. Cody and Jeffrey K. Smith (1997)

A Step-by-Step Approach to Using the SAS System for Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling by Larry Hatcher, Ph.D. (1994)

Applied Multivariate Techniques by Subhash Sharma (1996)

A short course on SAS is held once a semester.

  • STATA

STATA is a recently developed statistical package used in Sociology and the School of Public Policy. For more information, visit the company website. STATA is available on the Memex computer.

The complete set of STATA manuals is available in the locked cabinet in the Statistical Research Services Center and are non-circulating. They include:

Getting Started with Stata for Windows
    Graphics Manual
    User's Manual
    Reference A-G
    Reference H-0
    Reference P-St
    Reference Su-Z

Statistics with Stata 5 by Lawrence C. Hamilton (1998)

A short course on SAS is held once a semester.

For all these statistical packages, an excellent reference resource is located at UCLA's Statistical Computing website. This site is especially helpful for those learning any one of these programs (SPSS, SAS or STATA).
