Resources
An excellent reference
resource for the statistical packages listed below is available at
UCLA's Statistical Computing website. This site is especially
helpful for those learning any one of these programs.
For additional qualitative software resources, check out the
American
Evaluation Association's website. Additionally,
Handling Qualitative Data: A Practical
Guide by Lyn Richards is an excellent book and
is available for check-out through the University Libraries and can be found at this link.
Available for use by patrons in the
shared GIS room in the C-Wing on the first floor of Fenwick Library (ask at the reference desk for access if
staff are not present) are the following hardware and software:
Hardware
Computers are
available in this room for quantitative and qualitative analysis
programs as well as GIS. Available peripherals include a
dedicated scanner and printer.
Note: These computers are only intended for those performing
analysis with certain software packages. Misuse of these
terminals will result in revocation of your access.
Software
The
following software resources with support documentation, manuals, and
several other non-circulating books (available for in-house reference
use) are available for use:
- Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The
SPSS company website
is an excellent resource for technical support including SPSS
AnswerNet. CD-ROM based tutorials for SPSS Basics and SPSS
Intermediate
are available in the shared GIS room in the C-Wing. Each CD takes
about 4.5 hours to complete. Also, a tutorial is available within the
SPSS program. Go to "Help" on the menu bar.
- Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) is the most complete and
complex statistical package available, and provides a range of data integration
techniques empowers organizations to collect, classify, process, analyze and
interpret data. For more information, please visit

- STATA is an integrated statistical package used in
Sociology and the School of Public Policy that provides data analysis, data management, and graphics features. For more information,

- NVivo allows researchers to conduct qualitative analysis by
importing data such as textual, graphical, and audiovisual
materials. For more information about this product, please visit
the company website.

- AnSWR is a text-based qualitative analysis software. This
software
is mostly used for team analysis. It is available FREE from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and can be downloaded from
their website.
