MLA Bibliography

International in scope, this electronic bibliography, published by the Modern Language Association, uses descriptors to index scholarly works (journal articles, monographs, book chapters, dissertation abstracts, proceedings, bibliographies, book series) on literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore.  Review articles are included, but not book reviews.  Online coverage begins with 1963, although the Bibliography got its start in 1921.  (Access for GMU patrons only.)

MLA in print:

The MLA Bibliography began in 1921 as the "American Bibliography" section of the journal, PMLA.  At its inception, it focused on scholarship by Americans on English, American, Romance, and Germanic literatures.  Its subject scope gradually broadened over the years; by 1956, its geographical coverage became international.

George Mason University holds the complete print run of PMLA; volumes 1 through 41 are in WRLC storage (order through Interlibrary Loan if you wish to use).  Volume 42 (1927) and onward are in the Fenwick Periodicals Department, shelved at the beginning of the Ps, as P. M. L. A.  In the Fenwick Reference Room, in the Index stacks, are the print volumes of the Bibliography alone, beginning with the 1965 volume.
