The ITU Employee of the Month Award for April 2004 went to Victoria Shelton, the University Libraries' Biology and Life Sciences Reference and Instruction Liaison Librarian. In addition to her many regular duties, Victoria has also worked diligently and creatively to establish library collections for the newly created National Center for Biodefense within the Department of Molecular and Microbiology. She has assisted with various projects, courses, and curricula within this department and the School of Computational Sciences. She has also written an article for BioMed Central, assisted with the Bioinformatics Orientations, worked to improve liaison effectiveness and collection support, assisted with the submission of the GeneOrder3.0 manuscript to BioMed Central Bioinformatics, and guided many professors, scientists, and students through the various library resources. Several lectures, such as Dr. Alibek's, and particular resources, such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences open access in full-text, were shared by Victoria in response to requests for assistance.
Victoria has become an integral part of the biological and life sciences departments at George Mason because of her hard work, pro-active communication style, and dedication to getting the job done. Among other things, she sends out to faculty and students notices of recent acquisitions that may be of interest to them, gives introductory lectures to students on library resources in bioinformatics and helps with journal searching and interlibrary loans. She also wrote a well researched and well-written article for the English Department's online journal, English Matters, helping to explain some emerging issues in library research to readers in the Humanities who may not be aware of what has been happening in the science library field. One doctoral student at the Prince William campus described her as a veritable pot of gold at the end of the rainbow because she is able to successfully procure quality information with a few keystrokes. Even the most esoteric, eclectic, obscure and remote piece of information seems to pose no challenge for her in her fast, efficient and accurate searches for needed information. She is always ready to help faculty and students in a thoughtful and polite way. Her commitment to service excellence and dedication to her students and faculty truly exemplifies all the best qualities in an ITU employee.
Victoria was given her award in Dr. Joy Hughes' office on Friday, April 2nd at 11:30. On behalf of the University Libraries and the Prince William Community, congratulations Victoria! We appreciate all that you do!
