Mercer Library Welcomes All Patrons For the Spring 2005 Semester!

Mercer Library would like to officially welcome all patrons back for the Spring 2005 Semester.  It looks to be an exciting spring, as classes in Bull Run Hall are in full swing and departments are getting settled into their new quarters.  Mercer Library has been preparing for the start of classes by processing new titles, shifting of all Reference and Circulating materials, and an inventory of all library owned items.  The Reference staff has been hard at work developing additional library instruction sessions.  In addition, Mercer Library has seen growth, both in head count numbers, and in document fulfillment requests, including Interlibrary Loan materials, WRLC requests, and InterCampus Lending.  Please stop by to utilize all these resources and more this semester!

The first snowflakes have fallen on campus, the wind is clanging bells, and the pond is frozen!  Yes, it's time to prepare for the winter weather!  The Prince William Campus is located to the west of the Fairfax Campus, and therefore may see more inclement weather.  It is always a good idea to be cautious of the road conditions and the weather forecasts.  In addition to watching local news reports, don't forget to review GMU's Procedure 2207.  The University's main information line, (703) 993-1000 is kept up to date with all closings and cancellations.  Keep warm & safe this winter!

DATABASE SPOTLIGHT

Public Library of Science

The Public Library of Science (PLOS) is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians who have initiated an open access scientific publishing venture. PLOS journals are managed by professional editors and the contributing authors are experts in their scientific fields. Currently, two peer-reviewed journals are available: PLOS Biology, which began in October 2003, and PLOS Medicine, which began in October 2004. These online journals provide full-text, searchable archives of high-impact, original research articles, essays ands case reports written by international scientists and scholars. All articles are available for immediate, unrestricted open access, without limitations on subsequent use. PLOS Biology also offers an e-mail content alert service of new research articles which are published weekly. Researchers can access this new database through the Databases heading on the GMU Libraries HomePage, alphabetically or under the heading General Science.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

University Libraries Online Access to Cell Press Journals

University Libraries announces online access to Cell, a major journal on developments in moledular biology, and to seven other premier journals of the Cell Press collection, including: Cancer Cell, Chemistry & Biology, Current Biology, Immunity, Neuron, Molecular Cell, and Structure.  The University Libraries' subscription offers access to the current and archived full-text and PDF files of the Cell Press journal articles.  Users may either search individual journals or search all available issues across multiple Cell Press journals.  Access is available to all Mason users through the E-journal Finder as well as the Mason Catalog located on the Libraries' website (http://library.gmu.edu).

In addition, Cell Press is providing free access to the online archive of the Cell Press collection beginning this month.  Of interest to the worldwide biomedical research community, the free archive includes content that is 12 months old (or older) and is available on both ScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com) and on the Cell Press journal sites (http://www.cellpress.com).

For more information, please contact Victoria Shelton, Life Science Liaison Librarian, at vshelton@gmu.edu or 993-8347.

EI Compendex

From the Libraries' website, we now have access to the engineering database, EI Compendex (Engineering Village 2) from Elsevier.  The link to EI Compendex has been added to the Database Wizard, both to the alphabetical and subject (Engineering and Technology) lists.  The database from Elsevier offers many enhanced services and features.  With the Compendex database from Elsevier, we have access to 18 additional years of coverage, going back to 1969.  The EV2 interface search features include Quick SEarch, Expert Search, eBook Search, and Thesaurus.

LexisNexis U.S. Politics & World News

LexisNexis has launched a free online resource called LexisNexis U.S. Politics & World News (http://www.lexisnexis.com/news/), which provides updated news stories on the Bush administration, notable political figures, Iraq, and more from over 4,000 U.S. and International news sources.  Special coverage on the Tsumani Disaster is currently featured on the site.  This site is the successor of their popular Campaign 2004 site, which provided news and information on Election 2004 candidates and issues surrounding the election.
