Mercer Staff Prepares for Fall 2004 & the Official Re-naming!

As the Prince William Campus grows and changes, Mercer Library is preparing to accommodate new students, faculty, and staff who will join our community on August 30th.  August 2004 finds Mercer Library undertaking an inventory of circulating collections as well as a shift in anticipation of new items and more growth room.  Hardware has also been updated for Electronic Reserves and Document Fulfillment (Document Fulfillment services include InterCampus Lending, Consortium Loan Services, and Interlibrary Loans).

In addition, the Prince William Campus is preparing for the dedication of Bull Run Hall on September 8, 2004.  Several events in the dedication ceremony will include the library.  We're looking forward to the exciting changes the Prince William community will experience this academic year!

Liaison Librarians have selected a number of new items received in July, as well as featured e-resources.  Please take note of any items of interest, as well as our hours as they change from Summer Intersession to the Fall Semester.  Finally, don't forget to read our staff spotlight on Teresa Kan, Mercer Library's Reserves/Media Reference Coordinator.  Teresa handles Prince William Campus reserve requests.  Please get in touch with her concerning your reserves needs for the Fall 2004 semester.  Teresa also works with Kristine Neuber, Assistive Technology/Web Accessibility Coordinator, to keep Mercer Library Assistive Technology up-to-date.  They will conduct a refresher course in the Fall.  Anyone interested in learning more about these services may contact Teresa for more information.

Thank you once again for your interest in Mercer Library.  We look forward to assisting you through the end of summer and into the 2004/2005 academic year!

LIBRARY RESEARCH WORKSHOPS

Introduction to Library Research

Not sure how to find and use library information resources?  Schedule a drop-in appointment to get acquainted with the basic elements of the research process and be introduced to the GMU library system, available electronic resources, and how to organize and evaluate information.

Sessions are held in the Mercer (Prince William Campus) Library, Occoquan (PWI) Bldg, Rm. 104J.  Please call 993-8348 to arrange an individual appointment.

Flyers detailing the new schedule of drop-in classes for the fall semester will be available soon in the library and at http://library.gmu.edu/research/classes.html.

DATABASE SPOTLIGHT

ProQuest "Digital Dissertations" and "Current Research @" databases provide expanded access.

ProQuest Digital Dissertations provides on-line access to the complete full-text file of dissertations in digital format starting with titles published in the Dissertation Abstracts database from 1997 forward.  With more than two million entries, the Dissertation Abstracts database is the single, authoritative source for information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses.  The database represents the work of authors from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities.  We add some 47,000 new dissertations and 12,000 new theses to the database each year.

The database includes bibliographic citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester.  Citations for dissertations published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts written by the author.  Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts.  The full text of more than 1.7 million of these titles is available in paper and microform formats.

In the companion Current Research @ Mason database, you can:

This service is intended to enhance an institution's electronic publishing and marketing presence on the Web by highlighting graduate research in the form of published dissertations and theses.

Dissertation Abstracts, Digital Dissertations, and Current Research @ Mason may all be accessed via the Univerity Libraries' Database web page - http://library.gmu.edu/resources/databases.html.

MEET TERESA KAN,
Mercer Library's Reserves/Media Reference Coordinator

Mercer Library has had the honor of working with Teresa Kan, Reserves/Media Reference Coordinator, for over 5 years.  Teresa came to George Mason University Libraries from the Prince William Public Libraries, bringing with her, expertise in library circulation services, as well as her positive attitude and exceptional customer service skills.  She previously taught school in Reston, Virginia and Taiwan.  Teresa earned her B.A. in Art History and a minor in Education.  Faculty and staff on the Prince William Campus find her indispensable, and enjoy working with her to coordinate reserve items and media issues.

Teresa was originally hired as the Document Fulfillment Coordinator, and worked in that position for over 2 years.  During that time, Teresa served for 2 years on the (InterCampus Lending) ICL Committee.  In both 2001 and 2002 she was awarded the Individual Impact Award, which offered a monetary award and 3 days of vacation for excellence in her position.

After accepting the Reserves/Media Reference Coordinator position, Teresa served 2 years on the ITU Advisory Committee.  In addition, she has undergone extensive Reference training through an in-house program created by Bio/Life Sciences Librarian, Victoria Shelton.

Teresa is currently enrolled in SOLINET, a paraprofessional program.  Through SOLINET, Teresa will receive her Academic Certificate in Library Information Technology upon completion of distance learning courses.

Teresa has been a joy to work with throughout the years, and she continues to display the excellent customer service qualities that helped the Mercer Library team win the ITU Customer Service Award in 2003.  She demonstrates a winning attitude and enthusiasm to grow in the University Libraries.  Teresa has been instrumental in ensuring that equipment used for electronic reserves has been upgraded for Fall 2004, and continues to improve Reserves Services for the Prince William community.

COURSE RESERVES

University Libraries provide a Course Reserves Service to support graduate and undergraduate classes.  Faculty may place high demand on specialized materials on reserve with restricted loan periods (two hour, four hour, one day, three days, and seven days). Two hour and four hour items are for in-library use only. Reserve materials may include library owned articles, books, videotapes, CDs, audiocassettes and personal copies of material. All reserve items on the Fairfax campus are available at the Media/Reserve Desk on the FIRST FLOOR of the Johnson Center Library. Prince William and Arlington Campus reserves may be obtained at the Circulation Desk in the Library.  Patrons must present a valid University or picture ID card to check out reserve items, with the exception of U.S. government publications.

Reserve Request forms are available at the circulation desks of the Fenwick, Johnson Center, Prince William Campus and Arlington Campus Libraries as well online through http://oscr.gmu.edu/.

All copied materials placed on reserve, except government publications, are protected by U.S. Copyright Law (U.S.C. Title 17). Faculty members must read and sign a copyright liability statement for all materials placed on reserve.

ELECTRONIC RESERVES

The Electronic Reserves System provides online access to journal articles that an instructor has assigned for a particular course. This is not necessarily a complete listing of all materials on reserve for an instructor. Please check the Library Catalog for a complete Course Reserve listing.

At this time, the electronic reserves system does not include chapters of books or multi-media items.  Print copies of the digitized articles are also available at the Circulation/Reserves Desks.
