Research & Educational Services’ Gateway Teaching & Learning Services provides reference and research services for undergraduate and other novice users of the University Libraries at Gateway Library in the Johnson Center. Gateway Services staff emphasize programs and services that foster the development of sound, context-related information fluency skills in each student as a basis for success in his or her academic career and as a lifelong user of research and information.
Gateway Services staff provide reference services; instruct classes and conduct workshops; cultivate positive, interactive relationships with other departments within the Libraries; assist, advise, collaborate with, and provide instructional design support to the instructional efforts of subject librarians. Gateway staff collaborates with Distance Education services; engage in outreach efforts to academic departments and academic support units; and support the development of a comprehensive array of instructional offerings for library instruction relevant to the curriculum and educational programs at George Mason University.
Staff also actively develop mutually beneficial relationships with university educational centers that contribute to the academic success of undergraduate students. A special focus of this group is to identify and work closely with appropriate programs and departments across the university, to contribute to the “Students as Scholars” university-wide program, and to weave information fluency goals and activities into the undergraduate curriculum.
