AI in the Libraries
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, libraries have a unique opportunity to help their communities understand, evaluate, and use these emerging technologies effectively. The George Mason University Libraries support AI literacy by providing access to learning resources, training opportunities, and educational programming that help patrons build essential knowledge and skills.
Our libraries promote information literacy by teaching users how to critically evaluate AI-generated content and understand both the capabilities and limitations of these tools. We are also exploring AI technologies that can enhance library research, improve access to information, and create meaningful learning opportunities for our community. In doing so, we emphasize the ethical, responsible, and equitable use of AI while ensuring that all members of our community have access to emerging technologies and the knowledge needed to use them confidently.
Libraries have long served as trusted guides in navigating changing information landscapes. By embracing AI thoughtfully and responsibly, we can help patrons develop the critical thinking skills and technological literacy necessary to succeed in an increasingly AI-driven world.

Workshops and Programs
Current AI initiatives in the libraries include staff and patron AI literacy training, hands-on learning opportunities with tools such as Microsoft Copilot, exploration of AI applications for metadata and discovery services, evaluation of ethical and responsible AI practices, and identification of opportunities to streamline library workflows while maintaining the Libraries' role as a trusted source of information. These efforts help ensure that libraries can support informed and equitable use of AI technologies across our communities.
AI Boot Camp for Graduate Students
The inaugural educational series for graduate students was AI Boot Camp for Graduate Students: Building AI Literacy, Ethics, and Intentional Practice. Held August 18–20, 2026, this three-day series of sessions introduced graduate learners to essential AI literacy, responsible AI use in research and publishing, ethical considerations, data best practices, and hands-on experimentation.
AI Community of Practice
Formed in September 2023, the libraries' AI Community of Practice focuses on the use of specific artificial intelligence tools for work and research best practices, giving members of the university community the opportunity to gain experience using existing and emerging AI tools; sessions include ChatGPT, Grammarly, Google Labs, and Bard (now Gemini). These online sessions include a 'sandbox' and reflection time, giving participants the opportunity to actively learn, experiment with, and think more deeply about the implications of different AI tools.
AI Salon Series
The AI Salon Series, which ran from September 2023 to May 2025, was a set of scholarly discussions conceived in the spirit of a French salon, with each in-person and virtual session designed to facilitate open dialog across the university about artificial intelligence and what it means for Mason and the global community. Topics have ranged from AI in the arts and humanities; ethical implications of AI; the hidden biases of AI; the impact of AI on copyright; and AI, deep fakes, and misinformation. Awards and Recognition
George Mason Libraries faculty have been recognized for their work in AI literacy and instruction, including by the Virginia Library Association 2025 award winners.
