Study Carrels

As students increasingly rely upon technology to complete their academic work and conduct research, electrical outlets for charging computers and other devices are in high demand. In fact, university students bring an average of two electronic devices with them to campus each day, which often need to be recharged. Individual Study Carrels provide students with a private space to study, while allowing them access to plug-in technology where they can recharge laptops and other mobile devices.

Large "Smart" Study Tables

FIRST FLOOR

Library Atrium and Main Service Desk

The customer service hub of the library, the Main Service Desk provides information and centralized assistance for people using the resources and services within the library. The 1,200 square-foot space features new books and current periodicals displays, a soft seating area for reading, and stand-up computer workstations. Wall display monitors provide visitors updates on current library events and resources. During the academic year, the Access Services Desk is staffed from 8 a.m. until midnight.

Gallery

A prominent showcase area with vertical and lateral display capabilities, the 300 square-foot Gallery will accommodate a variety of thematic exhibits which highlight student, faculty, and outside community artists' work for the campus and general public.

24-Hour Study Area

This 3,000 square-foot open study space provides a combination of study carrels and table seats for students to study, read, or research. Open 24-hours a day, this space provides patrons the study space they need–day or night.

Instruction Room

Librarians at George Mason University teach more than 1,000 instructional sessions each year. With integrated technology, the first floor Instruction Room offers 2,250 square feet of space for librarian provided instruction, visiting classes, and subject-specific workshops taught by subject librarians. To best accommodate the needs of users, space can be divided into two rooms.

Small Study Room

Individual study rooms are in high demand by both faculty and students at George Mason University. Conveniently located throughout the new library facility, nearly 30 individual study rooms are available for use and equipped with plug-in technology access and flat screen display monitors. These study rooms provide much-needed spaces for research, meetings, collaboration and faculty consultation. Small Study Rooms are approximately 100 square feet and can accommodate up to 4 library patrons.

Medium Study Room

Individual study rooms are in high demand by both faculty and students at George Mason University. Conveniently located throughout the new library facility, nearly 30 individual study rooms are available for use and equipped with plug-in technology access and flat screen display monitors. These study rooms provide much-needed spaces for research, meetings, collaboration and faculty consultation. Medium Study Rooms are approximately 130 square feet and can accommodate up to 6 library patrons.

Extra Large Study Room

Individual study rooms are in high demand by both faculty and students at George Mason University. Conveniently located throughout the new library facility, nearly 30 individual study rooms are available for use and equipped with plug-in technology access and flat screen display monitors. These study rooms provide much-needed spaces for research, meetings, collaboration and faculty consultation. Extra Large Study Rooms are approximately 280 square feet and can accommodate up to 11 library patrons.

Large Meeting Room

The first floor Large Meeting Room offers library staff and other departments within the university 450 square feet of space to meet and collaborate. Up to 18 library patrons can be accommodated in this room.

SECOND FLOOR

Special Collections Research Center

Environmentally controlled for temperature and humidity, the Special Collections Research Center area is 13,432 square feet of space dedicated to the preservation of unique and rare materials. This highly-specialized library within a library, supports the research and teaching missions of the university by collecting, preserving and providing access to unique and rare primary research resources—largely in book-form, manuscript, and archival format materials.

Special Collections Research Center Reading Room

Under strict access control and supervision, the Special Collections Research Center Reading Room provides individual researchers with space for study and scholarship of Special Collections holdings. The 610 square-foot space features semi-permanent and rotating displays of representative unique and rare holdings for library patrons to explore.

Special Collections Research Center Seminar Room and Oral History Recording Studio

Technologically-rich and sound-enhanced, this space provides for seminar instruction utilizing Special Collections resources, and functions as “studio” for recording oral history interviews. Designed to be versatile, the 990 square-foot Seminar Room and Oral History Recording Studio can also serve as higher-end group meeting space for faculty, researchers, and students.

Special Collections Research Center Exhibitions

An environmentally controlled showcase area with vertical and lateral display capabilities, the 500 square-foot Special Collections Research Center Exhibitions space will accommodate a variety of thematic exhibits which highlight the University Libraries’ rich and interesting holdings for the campus community and general public.

Research Commons and Digital Scholarship Center

The technologically-rich Research Commons and Digital Scholarship Center is a distinguishing feature of the new library. With 3,888 square feet of open plan seating, the Commons is the hub of collaborative activity for students and faculty. Four consultation rooms and custom-designed spaces provide an opportunity for direct, on-site collaboration between faculty/students with subject expert library faculty and staff, and staff of the Writing Center, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and the Division of Instructional Technology.

North Study Area

The 600 square-foot North Study Area is a two-story study-research space with an open seating plan where students can read, relax or conduct research.

Reading Room and Public Event Space

A marquee building feature, the beautiful two-story Reading Room and Public Event Space serves as an open “formal” reading room in the library that can be converted into event space for a wide range of academic purposes including lectures, poetry readings, and small academic conferences, among others. Technology-equipped, the 2,125 square-foot space has furniture that can be modified to accommodate individual or group study seating, or as seating for lectures and events.

Data Services and Lab

Adjacent to the Research Commons, the 750 square-foot Data Services Department and Data Lab assists Mason students and faculty by providing a suite of services related to data manipulation. Services include quantitative and qualitative data analysis, Geographic Information Systems assistance for geospatial data and research, and research consultation for data management plans and datasets use.

THIRD FLOOR

Technology-Rich Seminar Room

Technology equipped, the flexible space provided in the 600 square-foot Seminar Room allows faculty to schedule special class instruction, or for large student teams to conduct collaborative group research or study projects. This room can accommodate up to 20 library patrons.

Presentation Practice Room

Built on the third floor, Presentation Practice Rooms at the new library offer students much-needed space to complete assignments for public presentations. With 150 square-feet of space and technology to support presentation rehearsals, 5 students can be accommodated in the room.

Library Preservation Lab

Preservation and conservation of multi-format research materials is a critical facet of the library. With a fume hood and work benches, this 800 square-foot space will provide university librarians with the capability to preserve our rich collection and house specialized equipment, supplies, and chemicals.

Roof Garden and Terrace

Located on the third floor, the Roof Garden and Terrace features a beautiful court yard that can be used year round for receptions, small gatherings, and as a quiet place to study or enjoy the fresh air. With plantings and bench seating for 20, this open area provides natural light to interior spaces on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the library.

Faculty Research Room

With a beautiful view of north campus, the Faculty Research Room is conveniently located on the third floor of the new library facility. Equipped with plug-in technology access and flat screen display monitors, this room provides much-needed space for research, meetings, and faculty collaboration. The Faculty Research Room is approximately 280 square feet and can accommodate up to 11 people.

FOURTH FLOOR

Media-Rich Seminar Room

The technologically-rich 600 square-foot Seminar Room provides flexible space to faculty for special class instruction, and at other times for large student collaborative group research-study projects. In addition, seminar and instructional rooms housed in the library are often used by other departments for teaching and training students, faculty and community researchers. The room provides seating for up to 20 students.

Conference Room, Office of Dean of Libraries and University Librarian

The administrative headquarters for the Mason University Libraries system is located on the fourth floor of the new Fenwick Library. In addition to housing the Office of the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, this 600 square-foot area includes technology-equipped administrative meeting space, accommodating up to 20 staff.

Instruction Room

Librarians at George Mason University teach more than 1,000 instructional sessions each year. Large Study Rooms are approximately 200 square feet and can accommodate up to 8 library patrons.

FIFTH FLOOR

Faculty Research Collaborative Center

This versatile space on the library's fifth floor is designed specifically to accommodate faculty team research projects of short- to medium-term duration. The 500 foot space provides a quiet, scholarly setting and is technology equipped. To best accommodate the needs of faculty teams, space can be divided into two rooms.

Graduate Student Research Area

Graduate students at George Mason University have a specialized need for designated work areas that encourage serious, quiet study. With individualized study carrels and work stations, the new 2,000 square-foot Graduate Student Research Area is a modern-day library reading room. Up to 50 graduate students can be accommodated and may leave their research materials in secure compartments.

Digital Initiatives Lab

The Digital Initiatives Lab on the fifth floor is a combination experimentation, modeling, and production facility for a variety of digital library and publishing projects. Library patrons can experiment with cutting-edge technologies such as large-scale digitization of analog research materials, develop new content databases, and discover software development and adaptation, among other projects. The 270 square-foot space can accommodate 6 people.

Medium Study Room

Individual study rooms are in high demand by both faculty and students at George Mason University. Conveniently located throughout the new library facility, nearly 30 individual study rooms are available for use and equipped with plug-in technology access and flat screen display monitors. These study rooms provide much-needed spaces for research, meetings, collaboration, and faculty and librarian consultation. Medium Study Rooms are approximately 130 square feet and can accommodate up to 6 library patrons.
