Resources & Collection Management Services

The Resources and Collection Management Services Division (RCMS) has primary responsibility for the entire spectrum of processes dealing with the collection: identifying, locating, ordering, recording, processing, and maintaining bibliographic control of all research materials, as well as providing public service for some collections. RCMS is also responsible for the research materials budget and its wise stewardship. RCMS strives to ensure provision of the best possible collections of research materials in all formats for users throughout the university community, underpinning the University’s goals of strong support of learning, teaching, and research.

Fenwick Library opened in 1967, with wings B and C opening in 1974 and 1983, respectively.  The 1990s saw the opening of the Johnson Center Library in 1995, and major new libraries at the Science and Technology (1997) and Arlington (1999) campuses, George Mason University Libraries has grown into a truly interdependent system of a research center and an undergraduate library in Fairfax along with full-service facilities, each with a unique identity, at our other campuses.

In January 2011, the Arlington Campus Library (now Mason Square Library) moved into Founders Hall (now Van Metre Hall). With  the expansion of Fenwick Library, preliminary planning toward renovation of space for the Gateway Library, and planning for new library space on the Science and Technology Campus, the University Libraries’ collections continue to grow, physically and electronically, often with gifts. (George Mason University Libraries Gifts Policy).
